Border Trade Fair at Dongguan Village
The jade trade fair was in Dongguan Village, one of the three major native places of overseas Chinese. Since the village was situated in the west of the Tengchong City, it was known as the Dongs in the West (Xidong). It was the birth place of Xidong business group, the leading merchants among the four famous merchants— “the Dongs in the East, the Dongs in the West (Xidong), the Lius in the South, and the Dengs in the North”, in the late Qing Dynasty and early Republic of China period. With a long history andprofound culture, the village was an important post station on the ancient Tea-Horse Road. Inside the village, there were merchants, factories, workshops and schools. Each family had a jade workroom to keep them busy and made lucrative businesses. During the Guangxu Period of the Qing Dynasty, the Chronicle of Tengyue recorded in details the grand jade processing in the late Qing Dynasty: the sound of producing beads, bracelets, hairpins, and other stuffs was there all day long and the whole street could hear it. There were hundreds of jade shops in the town and thousands of households in villages doing jade business. The most popular one was the Dongguan Village. Each family processed the jade at night and sold the jade products in daytime. The Tengyue town was most prosperous.
Although after the founding of the PRC, especially between the Cultural Revolution, the trade in Dongguan Village paused for a while, the townspeople never stopped to pass down the jade culture of Xidong and the business culture of overseas Chinese. After the reform and opening-up, Xidong actively responded to the government to redevelop the brand of Xidong. To regulate the jade industry, the towns people reopened the jade trade fair under the name of Xidong Grand Compound in the former residence of the fifth master of Xidong advocated by the descendants of the sixth master of Xidong. This act allowed a centralized management of jade products processed by each workroom, and now an industrial chain of jade jewelries that included design, processing, wholesale and retail has come into being.
Xidong people have always been working hard to build a jade trade fair, inherit jadeite culture and promote national spirit.
