Xidong Grand Compound
Xidong Grand Compound is located at Dongguan Village in Tengchong City. It got the name Xidong as it was the residence of the Dong family, who made a fortune in the late Qing Dynasty and early Republican of China (ROC) period. The Compound is also commonly known as "small peach garden" or "broad lane" among the locals.
In the late Qing Dynasty and early Republic of China period, the border city Tengchong became a place lined up with stores and teemed with merchants. There emerged four famous merchants to dominate the business community, namely, "the Dongs in the East, the Dongs in the West (Xidong), the Lius in the South, and the Dengs in the North". Among them, the firm Maoheng of Xidong became the first multinational company in the history of Tengchong, with numerous subsidiaries established in China and Southeast Asia, covering thirty-two countries across the five continents. As recorded in Yunan Zhengqi Ge (Song of Righteousness of Yunnan), a chronicle that came out in 1937, “Tengyue people (Note: Tengyue is part of Tengchong) are adept in business and the wealthiest families are the Dongs in the East and the Dongs in the West (Xidong), with the latter being more influential.”
The Dongs have long dwelled in this area, with a history dating back to the 15th year of the Hongwu period in the Ming Dynasty when their ancestor Dong Jiu followed Mo Ying to conquer Tengchong and got military merit. Dong Jiu was appointed General Wuxin to guard the city and the title was passed down through eight generations. When the title was passed to the sixth and seventh generations, a branch of the Dongs settled in the village, and lived there until Xianfeng years to Tongzhi years of the Qing Dynasty. Since then, the Dongs have multiplied in this area till the twenty-first generation. To commemorate the title and military merits of the ancestors, the village was named Dongguan Village, literally, Village of the Official Dongs.
Over the past 600 years, the Dongs in the Dongguan Village, Tengchong City, Yunnan Province, has developed into a famous clan that has produced a great many generals, scholars and merchants. From the middle and late Qing Dynasty to the Republic of China period, generations of merchants brought prosperity to the family. They had established more than ten transnationals, including Fuchunheng, Chunyanji, Maoxingxiang, Yongyu and Xinji. In 1928, Chunyanji and Maoyanji merged into Maoheng, which ushered in its prime time of business. With subsidiaries in over 26 major cities in China and Southeast Asia, it became the bellwether in the business community of Southwest China.
"Being merchants and Confucius scholars at the same time" is a distinguishing feature of the Xidong people. For centuries, the Dongs adhered to the fine tradition of "farming and reading to thrive the family". Therefore, the clan has produced Confucian and literary masters like Dong Dachun. Almost all the Dongs that threw themselves into the business circle were poets and writers at the same time, and they left a lot of collections of poems and literary writings.
It was the fine tradition of the Dong clan of Xidong village to love the country and the home place. In 1942, when Tengchong was amid wars, the Dongs donated generously. The sixth master of the Dong family raised more than two million silver dollars to buy two planes which were used to transport supplies and personnel during the war. He also donated his mansion to be the headquarters of the 54th expeditionary army, while leading the whole family to live in a shanty back on the hill. When the war ended in 1944, Tengchong was in a total mess with not even one complete room or one intact leaf. And it was then that Mr. Dong made a choice that almost cost the entire family’s savings—to put up 60 million silver dollars, which almost equals to six billion RMB today, to support the post-war restoration of Tengchong. The most representative one was that one quarter of the funds was used to build the national memorial cemetery to commemorate the martyrs in the War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression. Their deeds proved that the family not only helped save the country but also reached out to the poor. Many touching stories are still popular today. Therefore, the Dong family was regarded by the locals as a family of good deeds, a family of wealth and most of all, a family of benevolence. Today, the family is prosperous and rich in talents.
The Xidong Grand Compound has been there for more than a hundred years. After the founding of the PRC, most of the family’s businesses were donated to the government to aid the national restoration and now they only focus on the jade industry. The Compound, mainly composed of a cluster of quaint buildings with the old house of Dong Nanxuan, the sixth master of the Xidong family, as the mainstay, has inherited and promoted the family’s century-old merchant culture and jade culture. It has won people’s heart with its integrity and taken as its own responsibility to love his country and his hometown. Now, it has developed into a time-honored brand mainly engaged in jade mining, processing and management, offering the special food of Tengchong City, and meanwhile engaged in protection of old villages and promotion of business travel culture. It is the new king of the jade industry.
